When you sell your house that contains a full power wood workshop and move full-time into an RV, your project building capabilities change. Follow The Wandering Woodcrafter as he develops new projects and discovers the many wood projects that can be accomplished with hand and portable power tools – all while sitting at a picnic table.
My projects generally fall into three primary categories – Character Carvings, Freehand Custom Signs, and RV Maintenance.
Freehand Custom Sign Carving
While most of the signs I make are made with red cedar, I have produced a few using customer supplied or sawmill sourced hardwoods – generally live edge slab strips left over from the initial passes of a sawmill. The majority of the signs are 5.5″ x 18″, but can be made with any size lumber.

Character Carvings
Character carving has helped me spend many hours, sitting calmly at my picnic table or under a tree. The primary wood that I use is basswood – a straight grain soft wood preferred my many other woodcarvers. My characters are generally made as gifts, often to celebrate some event or activity of the intended recipient. Like my medical person (COVID-19 worker), a stint in the Navy or Marines, or snowmen to be used as Christmas ornaments.
